MACON, Ga. — UPDATE: The man killed in the crash has been identified as Brandon Hand, 31, according to Crisp County Coroner Richard Wright. His family has been notified.
ORIGINAL STORY: A man was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer on I-75 this weekend after a separate crash, according to the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office.
They say it started when a Hyundai passenger vehicle rear-ended another on I-75 at mile marker 94 around 5:30 a.m. Saturday.
The car that was rear-ended veered off of the roadway and hitting a fence and a tree, according to the release. Then its hood erupted in flames.
They say the driver of a Hyundai left his vehicle to find some of his belongings, according to the account from the other driver. And, after being unable to locate the Hyundai driver, investigators determined he was struck by a tractor trailer.
He was found about 50 yards from the original accident, was treated by paramedics on the scene but died at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, according to the release.
They say the tractor trailer struck the man in the right-hand lane of the roadway.
The sheriff’s office says a tractor-trailer driver stopped at the scene, saying he believed his truck may have struck debris from the crash.
The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case two separate crashes, with the original passenger vehicles involved in a crash and the tractor-trailer hitting the driver.
The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office says the two crashes remain under investigation.
