RV owners face a higher risk of breakdowns on the road due to:

  • Complexity and Maintenance: RVs have multiple systems (plumbing, electrical, heating, cooling) that require regular maintenance to prevent breakdowns.
  • Reduced Maneuverability: Their size and weight result in longer stopping distances and wider turns, make quick maneuvers difficult.
  • Towing Challenges: Towing adds weight and length, affecting braking, acceleration and maneuverability, and necessitates frequent checks on equipment.
  • Lighting Issues: Many RVs may have inadequate lighting, making night driving more hazardous.
  • Parking and Rest Stops: RVs need more space for parking and maneuvering, making it tough to find suitable spots, especially during peak travel times.
  • Roadway Safety: Their large size can obscure more of the road and pose greater risks to oncoming traffic if they’re on the shoulder.

ESS Founder Story

ESS was founded by David Tucker, an innovative oil industry executive known for pioneering offshore safety solutions.

Following his retirement from two successful startups, Tucker embarked on a cross-country journey in his motorhome.

In 2014, a near-fatal incident with an 18-wheeler and his RV inspired him to develop more effective ways to enhance the visibility of disabled vehicles and give oncoming drivers better advance warning to avoid them safely.

How it works

H.E.L.P. places the vehicle in emergency mode through:

Manual Activation by the driver when the vehicle is in park.

Automatic Deployment - Collision - triggered when a vehicle’s airbag or other OEM preferred sensory equipment is activated.

‍Automatic Deployment - Enhanced Triggers - other safety trigger events such as a tire blowout, driveline failure, automated driving take-over, or other vehicle system failure. 

When the H.E.L.P. emergency mode is activated, it communicates in two forms: 

1. Visual - 4.5 Hz emergency flash rate through the hazard lamp circuit

2. Digital – Deployment of an emergency warning to traffic data infrastructure.  Approaching drivers receive advanced warnings of hazards ahead through audio, visual and other alerts.

Standard Hazard Lighting
  • Limited Visibility: Standard hazards only flash turn signals at the front and rear of an RV, making them less noticeable – especially in poor visibility conditions or during the day.
  • Driver Awareness: These lights can be easily missed by other drivers, particularly in heavy traffic or if the RV is on the shoulder.

  • Enhanced Visibility: H.E.L.P. adds rapid-flashing accent lights at the top and sides of RVs, in addition to the turn signals – making the RV much more noticeable.
  • Increased Warning Time: The additional lights create a more prominent visual warning, giving oncoming drivers more time to avoid potential dangers.
H.E.L.P.® Digital Alerts
  • Beyond Line-of-Sight Protection: These alerts work with H.E.L.P. Lighting Alerts to offer an additional layer of safety.
  • GPS-Based Warning: Alerts are transmitted to oncoming vehicles through GPS mapping apps and in-dash head units – providing advance warnings even if the RV isn’t visible.

H.E.L.P. is a regulatory compliant solution that combines highly visible emergency-based flash rates of the vehicle lighting, and digital notifications sent to other vehicles and GPS-based mapping applications.

These features deliver advanced warning to oncoming traffic -- giving approaching drivers minutes, not just milliseconds, to more safely respond to the disabled vehicle.

‍Our H.E.L.P. solution increases visual conspicuity of stationary and disabled vehicles with the addition of an emergency mode added to a vehicle’s standard hazard light system, which offers:

  • Faster emergency mode flash rates combined with smart intelligence
  • Emergency activation features that deploy automatically upon collision (airbag deployment) or other safety trigger events such as a tire blowout or engine failure
  • Manual activation by the driver when the vehicle is stationary and in park

The H.E.L.P. solution integrates intelligent emergency warnings into digital notifications which supplement the increased visibility provided by the feature’s enhanced emergency lighting.

  • When H.E.L.P. is activated, oncoming drivers receive advanced warning of a disabled vehicle ahead via their in-car navigation screen or phone-based mapping app.
  • These digital alerts work seamlessly with OEM and third-party traffic data providers.

H.E.L.P. Products for Coaches and Pull-Behinds

  • OEM Fitments – ESS is collaborating with major RV manufacturers to integrate H.E.L.P. Alerts as either a standard or optional safety feature in new RV models.
  • ESS is partnering with RV manufacturers and upfitters to develop aftermarket kits for adding H.E.L.P. Alerts to their existing RVs, including:

    - Coaches (Class A, B and C)
    - Trailers and pull-behinds

Safety for the Connected Recreational Vehicle

When H.E.L.P. is activated, alerts and notifications are automatically sent to oncoming drivers via traffic data and OEM cloud connections. In cases like airbag deployments, emergency responder channels are also informed to ensure a swift and efficient response.
