5th person dies in 36-vehicle ‘brown out’ pileup on I-25 near Pueblo

Another man injured in the massive Tuesday pileup on Interstate 25 in southern Colorado died overnight, bringing the number of people killed to five, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Another 28 people were injured in the 36-vehicle crash, which involved seven semitrailers and 29 passenger vehicles, according to the agency.

Heavy winds that blew dirt and dust across the highway dropped visibility to “next to nothing,” state patrol Maj. Brian Lyons said. Troopers first responded to the crash at 10:02 a.m. Tuesday.

I-25 was closed in both directions for hours between exit 91 for Stem Beach and Colorado 45 in Pueblo, near milemarker 94, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Southbound I-25 reopened around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, and the northbound lanes reopened just before 11:40 p.m., according to an update from the state patrol.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No updates on the conditions of the other injured victims were immediately available Wednesday.

The Pueblo County Coroner’s Office will publicly identify the five people killed in the crash.

State patrol officials said the four people confirmed dead on Tuesday included two men from Walsenburg, a woman from Rye and a woman from Pueblo. It’s unknown where the man who died overnight was from or which vehicles the five were in.
