FBCSO deputy dies, days after being struck by vehicle while helping stranded motorist

HOUSTON – An off-duty Fort Bend County Sheriff’s deputy who was struck by a vehicle while helping a stranded motorist over the weekend has died, authorities said.

The sheriff’s office said around 3:40 a.m. Saturday, FBCSO Deputy Kenneth Lewis was hit by a passing vehicle as he was helping a stranded motorist on I-10 near Eldridge Parkway in Houston. The striking vehicle fled the scene.

Investigators said Deputy Lewis was in his personal vehicle when he pulled over to help.

Deputy Lewis was taken to a nearby hospital where authorities listed him in “critical but stable condition.”

On Monday, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office announced that Deputy Lewis succumbed to his injuries.

“Deputy Lewis demonstrated the very best of law enforcement. His selflessness, dedication, and commitment to serving others reflect the core values of our office and the profession he proudly served. We ask that you continue to keep Deputy Lewis’ family, friends, and our FBCSO family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the sheriff’s office said.

The Houston Police Department is investigating the incident. They do not have information on a suspect at this time.

In 2014, Deputy Lewis survived another serious crash with an alleged drunk driver while working a routine traffic stop. He was serving with the Missouri City Police Department at that time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the HPD Vehicular Crimes Division at (713) 247-4072 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Houston at (713) 222-TIPS.
