SUNLAND, LOS ANGELES (KABC) – Two people were killed in a violent crash involving a semitruck and a sedan on the 210 Freeway in the Sunland area on Friday night, authorities said.
The collision between a car and a big rig was reported shortly before 10 p.m. on the eastbound 210 near Sunland Boulevard.
A preliminary investigation indicated that Hardev Singh, of Manteca, was driving a Freightliner tractor-trailer on the eastbound side of the freeway “when he collided with a Honda Accord that was parked on the right shoulder,” California Highway Patrol wrote in a statement.
A 23-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man in the Honda were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names were withheld pending notification of family members.
Singh, 43, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, CHP said. He declined to be taken to a hospital.
Footage from the scene showed the mangled sedan after it was struck by the big rig. Traffic was snarled as authorities shut down the eastbound lanes of the freeway for about three hours.
“The cause of the crash is under investigation,” CHP said in a news release. “It has not been determined whether alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in this traffic crash.”
On Saturday morning, CHP told ABC7 and a local wire service that a third person involved in the crash had died. A CHP spokesperson later said the updated death toll was erroneous, confirming that two people were killed in the crash.
Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact CHP Officer C. Gilmore, ID 24793, at the CHP Altadena Area office at (626) 296-8100. After business hours, please contact the Los Angeles Traffic Management Center at (323) 259-3200
