Driver struck, killed after exiting vehicle on I-95 in Brevard; good Samaritan also hurt, FHP says

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A driver died after exiting his sedan on Interstate 95 and being hit by two other vehicles overnight in Brevard County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers responded shortly after midnight to northbound I-95, just south of State Road 46, reporting the driver — a 33-year-old Port Saint Lucie man — died at the scene.

According to an FHP crash report, the Port Saint Lucie man was driving a 2019 Chevy Impala in the center lane of I-95 as a 45-year-old Weston man drove a 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 in the outside lane, both traveling northbound.

The Port Saint Lucie man changed from the center to the outside lane and the front right of the Chevy struck the rear left of the Volkswagen, causing the Weston man’s SUV to veer off the roadway into a ditch as the Chevy veered onto the inside shoulder and struck the concrete median, becoming disabled in the inside northbound lane, the report states.

The Port Saint Lucie man exited the Chevy as a 2025 Hyundai Elantra and a 2019 Audi A4 approached, both of them traveling northbound in the inside lane, according to the report.

The Hyundai driver swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid a collision, yet the Elantra struck the left of the Chevy and then the Port Saint Lucie man, troopers said. The impact threw the Port Saint Lucie man into the inside lane, where he was then struck by the Audi after its driver also attempted to swerve out of the Chevy’s way.

A good Samaritan identified as a 27-year-old woman from Dallas, North Carolina, stopped to assist the Port Saint Lucie man, troopers said. She was struck in the center lane by a 2010 Nissan Murano despite how both she and the Nissan’s driver attempted to dart out of each other’s way, troopers said.

The good Samaritan was airlifted to the hospital in critical but stable condition, according to FHP. The Weston man suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized, troopers said. All others involved in the crash remained at the scene, according to FHP.

The wreck is still under investigation.
