Spring Hill man struck, thrown off bridge in fatal I-75 crash

GIBSONTON, Fla. (WFLA) — A man was struck by a car and thrown off a bridge in a fatal I-75 crash in Gibsonton on Sunday morning.

The Florida Highway Patrol said at around 5:37 a.m., a 35-year-old Spring Hill man, driving a Honda Civic, was involved in a single-vehicle crash on southbound I-75.

Another vehicle, a Mazda, driven by a 20-year-old Kentucky woman, was also traveling southbound on I-75 and collided with a Nissan Pathfinder, driven by a 22-year-old Brandon woman.

The drivers of the Honda and the Mazda were standing outside their vehicles following their separate collisions.

A fourth car, a Chevy Traverse, driven by a 41-year-old Brandon woman, collided with the Honda Civic and the driver, who was then thrown off the bridge into the Alafia River. The man suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

After striking the Honda and the man, the Chevy continued and collided with the Mazda.

The driver of the Chevy suffered minor injuries. The drivers of the Mazda and the Nissan were not injured.

The crash closed all four lanes of southbound I-75 for over five hours, while cars used the shoulder of the highway to get through.
