Police: Man hit, killed while helping push disabled car on I-471; 2 others injured

NEWPORT, Ky. — A person has died and two others have been hospitalized after a crash on the Daniel Carter Beard Bridge early Sunday morning, according to Newport police.

Officials say it happened around 3:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-471.

Authorities say a vehicle was broken down in the far right lane, and a person stopped behind it to offer assistance.

While pushing the disabled vehicle, police say a car struck the back of the vehicle, pushing the pedestrian into the vehicle they were assisting.

The pedestrian and a passenger in the car were taken to UC Medical Center. The pedestrian later died as a result of his injuries.

Monday, the Hamilton County coroner identified the pedestrian as Antonio Conrad, 36.

Police say the passenger was treated for a spinal cord injury.

The driver of the disabled vehicle was taken to a hospital that police did not name with what, police say, were minor injuries.

Officials say the driver of the car that hit the pedestrian and disabled vehicle was not injured.

The crash closed lanes on the bridge for several hours Sunday morning. Newport police is investigating “potential contributing factors” and say criminal charges are possible.
