Driver dies after violent crash under stalled big rig in Riverside County

One person was killed in a violent collision with a semi-truck on a Riverside County freeway just before midnight Wednesday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Footage from stringer service KNN shows a sedan wedged deeply under the semi-truck’s trailer on the right-hand shoulder of the westbound 91 Freeway at La Sierra Avenue. The top half of the sedan was crushed back to the midpoint of the car.

CHP said officers arrived to find the driver dead at the scene, and investigators closed the third westbound lane of the freeway until 4:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

Unconfirmed reports from KNN indicate that Riverside City Fire crews initially requested a truck for extrication, but it was canceled after the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Details remain limited as CHP says the crash is under investigation. The driver was not identified.

KNN also reports the semi-truck driver was uninjured and stated that he had stopped on the right shoulder to fix his lights when his big rig was rear-ended. CHP said no other injuries were reported.

As of 9 a.m. Wednesday, there were no road closures at the scene, according to Caltrans QuickMap.
