Crash claims lives of missing grandparents traveling to West Virginia landmark

MARSHALL COUNTY, W.Va. (WTRF) — The four grandparents who went missing earlier this week while traveling from Buffalo, New York, to West Virginia have been found deceased, according to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Mike Dougherty confirmed Saturday night that the victims — Kishore Divan, Asha Divan, Shailesh Divan and Gita Divan — were located inside their vehicle following a fatal crash. Their car was discovered about 9:30 p.m. Aug. 2, down a steep embankment along Big Wheeling Creek Road in Marshall County.

First responders remained on the scene for more than five hours.

The family had last been seen Tuesday after a stop at a Burger King on Peach Street in Erie, Pennsylvania. They were traveling in a light green Toyota Camry with New York license plate EKW2611 and were en route to Pittsburgh, with plans to stay overnight at Prabhupada’s Palace of Gold in Moundsville, West Virginia. Authorities said the group never checked in and their phones began going straight to voicemail that night.

A missing persons report had been filed in Buffalo, and Marshall County deputies were working with New York authorities to locate the family. Cell phone pings were recorded early Wednesday morning in Moundsville and Wheeling, but no further contact was made.

Sheriff Dougherty extended his condolences to the victims’ families and said further information will be released once the investigation is complete.
