1 dead after multi-vehicle crash on I-24 in La Vergne

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A deadly multi-vehicle crash closed all lanes of Interstate 24 near the Davidson County and Rutherford County line for several hours Wednesday morning.

According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the crash was reported just before 2 a.m. Wednesday in the eastbound lanes of the interstate, near the Old Hickory Boulevard exit in La Vergne.

TDOT officials confirmed early Wednesday morning that the crash involved a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle.

A preliminary crash report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol said an International tractor-trailer was left unoccupied in the roadway, blocking two lanes of the interstate after a previous crash. A Chevrolet Silverado driving eastbound on I-24 crashed into the stopped tractor-trailer, and was then struck by a Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer.

The Chevrolet driver, 56-year-old Hector Rodriguez Banuelos, was pronounced dead after the crash. Reports said he was wearing a seatbelt at the time. The 36-year-old Freightliner driver was wearing a seatbelt, and was not injured.

No charges were filed following the crash, and no information about the driver of the unoccupied tractor-trailer was available.

After approximately five hours, the eastbound lanes fully reopened just before 8 a.m. Wednesday.
