FHP: Crash Involving Jackknifed Tractor-Trailer Snarled Traffic Near Downtown Tampa Monday Morning

TAMPA, Fla. - I-275 through downtown Tampa is moving once again after a multi-vehicle crash closed the interstate early Monday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, an unloaded tractor-trailer was traveling northbound on I-275 near Ashley Drive around 2:40 a.m. with a Hyundai SUV traveling alongside it when they both came upon an existing crash. Troopers say the driver of the tractor-trailer, a 45-year-old man, heavily hit the brakes, which caused the tractor-trailer to jackknife, slide toward the median and collide with the right side of the SUV.

Post-impact, the tractor-trailer collided with the center median and landed on the median wall.

Large portions of the concrete wall, diesel fuel and other vehicle fluids were scattered in the north and southbound lanes of I-275 after the crash, according to FHP.

The roadway was closed until about 6:30 a.m.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries in the crash.
